What is a dental crown?
A dental crown is a custom-made cap that fits over a damaged or weakened tooth to restore its strength, function, and appearance. Crowns are designed to look and feel like natural teeth and are made from durable materials such as ceramic, zirconia, metal alloys or a combination of these. They are commonly recommended for teeth that are cracked, heavily decayed, worn down, root canal treated, or significantly weakened. Crowns also improve aesthetics in cases of severe discolouration or misshapen teeth and are used to restore dental implants.
A crown provides protection by covering the entire visible surface of the tooth. This helps prevent further cracking, restores chewing comfort, and offers a long-term solution for structural support. When crafted well and properly cared for, dental crowns can last a very long time.

How are dental crowns made and placed?
The process typically involves two appointments. At the first visit, the tooth is shaped under local anaesthetic to make room for the crown and a digital scan or impression is taken. This information is sent to a dental laboratory, where the crown is custom-made to match the natural shape, bite, and colour of your teeth. A temporary crown is placed to protect the tooth in the meantime.
At the second appointment, the final crown is assessed for fit, shade, and comfort. Once the bite is checked and everything is precise, the crown is cemented securely in place. The procedure is generally comfortable, with minimal post-treatment sensitivity.
Crowns made from porcelain or ceramic offer superior aesthetics for front teeth, while zirconia provides exceptional strength for back teeth and for patients who grind. Metal or gold crowns are extremely durable but less commonly chosen for visible areas.
With proper brushing, flossing and regular dental check-ups, a crown can remain functional and attractive for many years. Delaying treatment when a crown is recommended can increase the risk of tooth fracture, infection, or tooth loss, so timely care is important.
